The properties of isocyanates vary substantially depending on their structure. Aromatic isocyanates are not only lowest in cost, they are extremely reactive and the building block for most polyurethane foams, elastomers and thermoplastic polyurethanes. Aromatic isocyanates can be catalyzed with amines and with organotin compounds. Toluenediisocyanate (TDI) and methylenediphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) and their derivatives present the largest market for isocyanates.
