Improved Chemical Resistance (Acid Etch)
There is a lot of activity in replacing the conventional hydroxyl functional polymers which produces with HMMM crosslinking an acid sensitive ether bond with a more stable linkage. Functional groups such as carbamate, phenol and urea are being patented as potential sites with improved acid resistance. The secondary carbamate group of a urethane linkage is also reactive with HMMM, although the reaction rate is slower and self condensation is a major side reaction. A resin with only urethane groups in its backbone produces excellent acid resistance and exterior durability.
Alkylated melamine formaldehyde resins are used as crosslinker in high solids and waterborne coatings.
